چکیده

Multishell fullerenes could be produced in the circumstellar envelopes of rich carbon giants as proposed by Ugarte (1995) and could be carriers of diffuse interstellar bands. Here, we investigate a potential way to detect these molecules through the far infrared bands related to their vibrational spectra. Based on a surface continuum spherical description of the carbon shells, we have derived analytic expressions for their interaction potential and determined the vibrational frequencies of fullerenes in endohedral configurations. We find that their harmonic frequencies of oscillation lie in the range 20–65 cm−1. The associated bands could be observed with the spectroscopic facilities planned for the Far Infrared and Submillimeter Telescope (FIRST) providing a new way to confirm the existence of fullerenes in space. Suitable astronomical targets to search for these molecules are their likely sites of formation: carbon stars, post-AGB stars, protoplanetary nebulae, and dusty regions in the Galaxy.

Collective excitations of multishell carbon microstructures: Multishell fullerenes and coaxial nanotubes.

s and p plasmons in coaxial carbon nanotubes and multishell fullerenes are modeled in analogy with coupled collective excitations in finite, layered, two-dimensional-electron-gas, planar semiconductor superlattices. The curvature of the surface of these complex carbon clusters plays an important role in shaping the dimensionality ~one dimensional, two dimensional, or three dimensional! of the p...

Discrimination of Human Cell Lines by Infrared Spectroscopy and Mathematical Modeling

Variations in biochemical features are extensive among cells. Identification of marker that is specific for each cell is essential for following the differentiation of stem cell and metastatic growing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as a biochemical analysis more focused on diagnosis of cancerous cells. In this study, commercially obtained cell lines such as Human ovarian carcin...

Theoretical and Experimental Evaluation of Low-frequency Spectra of Nitric Acid Hydrates

The low-frequency region (below 175 cm−1) of the spectra of solid samples can provide valuable information on vibrational modes related to large amplitude motions, intermolecular vibrations or vibrations associated to weak linkages. Whereas far-infrared spectroscopy exhibits rather broad bands for solid hydrates, among other drawbacks of this technique, Raman spectroscopy produces narrow signal...

EXCESS THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES CALCULATIONS FOR ALCOHOLS IN INERT SOLVENTS BASED ON FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY MEASUREMENTS

Self-association of alcohols; including ethanol, methanol, cyclopentanol and octanol in separate mixtures with inert solvents have been studied using FT-IR spectroscopy. Except for the band at 3640 cm–1 in the IR spectrum of the alcohols which is due to the monomer species, the presence of other bands in the region of stretching vibrational frequencies of OH (3100-3700 cm–1) are attributed to t...
